The number of deaths was above the five-year average in private homes (12.1% above, 312 excess deaths), hospitals (2.6% above, 109 excess deaths) and other settings (7.6% above, 62 excess deaths), and below the five-year average in care homes (4.1% below, 80 fewer deaths). Of the 77 deaths involving COVID-19 in Week 28, 61.0% (47 deaths) had this recorded as the underlying cause of death, which was a higher proportion when compared with Week 27 (58.9%). This was an increase in all deaths compared with the week ending 7 July 2023 (Week 27), when the number of all-cause deaths registered was 9,736 COVID-19 accounted for 95 of these deaths (1.0%). In the week ending 14 July 2023 (Week 28), 10,030 deaths were registered in England and Wales 77 of these deaths mentioned novel coronavirus (COVID-19), accounting for 0.8% of all deaths.
